On 22 September 1937 the KMT published the CCP’s declaration of cooperation, and the Communists published a matching united-front statement: the Red Army would be redesignated, a civil-war truce was proclaimed, and both claimed resistance to Japan. Mao Zedong had already shifted the party line after Xi’an. This is a coalition instrument, not a dissolution of either party.

Context

Japan’s full-scale invasion after 7 July 1937 made a two-front Chinese war suicidal for both parties. The Xi’an Incident of December 1936 had forced Chiang to negotiate. Zhou Enlai handled much of the contact. Mao kept the army’s command autonomy. The later New Fourth Army incident shows the truce was incomplete.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

What the sources establish

Britannica’s Xi’an Incident article frames the 1937 united front. Mao’s 1937 resistance texts are official party line. Independent diplomatic histories add Soviet pressure. The September publications are the dated public carriers, not a peace treaty deposited at Geneva.

Established: a public CCP–KMT united-front declaration appeared in September 1937 with Mao as CCP leader. Not established: that intra-Chinese killing stopped, or that Mao became Chiang’s subordinate.
