On 1 August 527 Justin I died in Constantinople and Justinian, already crowned co-emperor on 1 April, became sole Augustus of the Eastern Roman Empire. The court, guards, and senate acclaimed a nephew who had long drafted policy. This is an accession, not the Codex and not a modern nationality for a man born near Tauresium.

Context

Justin’s reign had already favoured Justinian. Theodora’s marriage had been regularized. Illyrian Latin-speaking officers were the recruiting base. Procopius’s later Secret History paints a demonology of the pair; that pamphlet is a hostile source, used here only with criticism, not as a tape of 1 August.

Shared responsibility is part of Justinian becomes sole Eastern Roman emperor after Justin I’s death. Naming Justinian I does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
