On 19 April 2024 Venezuela's main opposition alliance, the Unitary Democratic Platform, confirmed former diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia as its candidate for the 28 July presidential election. He stood in place of María Corina Machado, who had been barred from office, after authorities also blocked her chosen substitute, Corina Yoris.
