In 1809 Gauss published Theoria motus corporum coelestium in sectionibus conicis solem ambientium, the Latin treatise that wrote out orbit determination, including the least-squares practice he had used on Ceres. He wrote the methods; computers in other observatories could now copy them. It is not a navy commission. The row stores one treatise.
Context
After Ceres and Pallas, Europe wanted a teachable orbit shop-manual. Theoria motus is that manual: observations in, elements out, with an error practice attached. A NASA ephemeris is not this book. Jérôme’s Westphalia and a household in mourning (Johanna died in 1809) are biographical weather, not extra instruments. A book that still left some of the 1801 numerical tricks only partly unpacked is a limit, not a reason to drop the dated treatise. Ceres remains the 1801 demonstration; this Latin title is the shop-manual others could copy without writing to Brunswick.
Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Theoria motus is not the 1801 Ceres night and not a later spacecraft. Mixed effects of Gauss publishes Theoria motus corporum coelestium are separate paths.
Why it matters
Improving data path: a copyable reduction method. High confidence on 1809. Modest-to-medium weight. Ceres 1801 remains the demonstration; this book is the public write-up. Legendre’s 1805 least-squares memoir is a rival print, not erased here. Later error-curve mythology is not this Latin title.
That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.
Who was responsible

Carl Friedrich Gauss
PersonDirect responsibility
responsibility level 0.4 · verified
He wrote the 1809 Latin treatise on orbit determination. The printer issued it. Complex author, not Piazzi and not a later NASA navigator.

What the sources establish
Göttingen’s digitised Gauss corpus includes Theoria motus. Britannica independently lists the 1809 astronomical treatise among his major works. Official: https://gdz.sub.uni-goettingen.de/ (opens in a new tab). Independent: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Carl-Friedrich-Gauss (opens in a new tab). The records establish 1809 publication. They do not establish a unique later orbit-software coefficient, or a NASA act. A contradictory first-edition year would change the row.
Established: Theoria motus was published in 1809 as Gauss’s orbit treatise. Not established: that it is the 1801 recovery, or that a modern Kalman filter is this book. A showing of a different first year would change the row.
Shared responsibility is part of Gauss publishes Theoria motus corporum coelestium. Naming Carl Friedrich Gauss does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1809-01-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.
