From 1685 Leibniz was charged to write the history and genealogy of the House of Guelph, travelling to archives in Germany and Italy. It served Hanover’s electoral and later British succession claims; those politics are named, not erased.

Context

GWLB and Britannica independently print the historian’s brief. The work remained unfinished at his death. This is not the 1684 calculus paper and not a later British statute he signed.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below.

Conventional years are 1646–1716. Surviving public files are GWLB Nachlass pages, the Akademie-Ausgabe, SEP, and encyclopedias. Leibniz did not typeset those later pages. Later electronic computers are not this life.

What the sources establish

GWLB’s Leibniz pages and Britannica independently describe the Guelph historical commission.

Established: the Guelph history was commissioned from 1685. Not established: that Leibniz drafted the Act of Settlement.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz did not file a later UNESCO form, a later Loeb colophon, or a later museum label as a personal act.
