In 2022 Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto led Finland's application to join NATO, submitted together with Sweden on 18 May 2022. On 5 July 2022 he was present at NATO headquarters, but did not sign himself, as allied ambassadors signed Finland's accession protocol, following the Madrid summit invitation, which started ratification.
