Péter Magyar is sworn in as Hungary's prime minister

Péter Magyar was sworn in as Hungary's prime minister on 9 May 2026 after Tisza's parliamentary victory in April.

The appointment is a consequence of the election, not a harm act. It matters because it fixes the date on which responsibility for executive decisions shifted to Magyar and his cabinet and began the measurable record of the new administration. From that point, claims about courts, public spending, media policy, Russia, EU funds or Ukraine can be evaluated against decisions by the new government rather than against campaign promises. Magyar's strongest defence is the electoral mandate he received. The corresponding accountability test is whether his government preserves political competition and independent institutions when those institutions constrain Tisza rather than Fidesz.
