In 1758 Rousseau’s letter on spectacles argued that a theatre would dissolve Genevan manners. It is cohesion-as-closure: one civic tone against plural amusements.

Context

Anti-theatre republicanism can protect a civic rite and can shrink cultural access.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

Why it matters

A 1758 anti-theatre letter is not a fire code and not a 1762 burning.
