In 1576 Innocent Gentillet issued Discours sur les moyens de bien gouverner… contre Nicolas Machiavel, the printed origin of a European ‘Machiavel’ as atheist tyrant-maker. The book is Gentillet’s. This Fact stores that polarising reception, not a new Florentine statute.

Context

French wars of religion needed a foreign villain. The printed Prince supplied a name. Huguenot and Catholic uses diverged. Neither is a 1498 chancery minute.

Niccolò Machiavelli is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

Why it matters

Polarisation path. High confidence on the 1576 book.

A slogan can be worse than the treatise. Keep the treatise and the slogan on different rows.

The name ‘Machiavel’ is his reception. The anti-Italian, anti-Queen-Mother polemic is Gentillet’s.

What the sources establish

Gallica holds early Gentillet print. SEP’s Machiavelli entry treats the Contre-Machiavel tradition as reception history.

Established: Gentillet’s anti-Machiavel discourse appeared in 1576. Not established: that it caused a unique massacre series.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, and museums are not converted into extra lifetime acts. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself. Confidence is stated on the impact path. A later English edition is not a recovered autograph. If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here. Confidence is stated on the impact path.
