In the mid-1650s French bishops and the crown pressed a formulary condemning five propositions attributed to Jansen, requiring signatures from clergy and nuns, including Port-Royal. Pascal’s party refused in print.

Context

Jesuit casuistry satire is adjacent, not identical. Unigenitus in 1713 is later.

Blaise Pascal is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

Why it matters

Rights path: compelled religious speech. High confidence on the campaign existing.

A signature order is not a joke in a Provincial letter. Keep the joke and the order on different rows.

Who was responsible

Contribution type and responsibility level for each recorded actor — not sole-author shorthand.

  • Direct responsibility

His Provinciales and later writings fed refusal. The signature order is the church-state’s.

What the sources establish

Port-Royal’s museum pages and Britannica’s Jansenism article independently narrate the formulary struggle.

Established: a formulary signature campaign targeted Port-Royal in Pascal’s last decade. Not established: that Pascal drafted a civil code of liberty.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, and museums are not converted into extra lifetime acts. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself. Confidence is stated on the impact path. A later English edition is not a recovered autograph. If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
