In 1871, after the French defeat and the proclamation of the German Empire, Louis Pasteur returned an honorary medical diploma previously granted by the University of Bonn and wrote of laboratory work as a duty of national recovery. He had lost a country of birth in the Jura’s wider war shock and would lose Alsace as a teaching landscape he had used at Strasbourg. The row stores scientific nationalism, not a claim that he commanded troops.
Context
Many French scholars answered 1870–71 with similar refusals. Pasteur’s version is documented and unusually loud because of his fame. The later beer studies openly cite German brewing as the rival to beat. That book’s industrial content is a separate improving row. Bismarck, Moltke, and the National Assembly made the political settlement. Pasteur did not sign Frankfurt, but he did sign the Bonn return.

Naming Louis Pasteur does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1871-01-18 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
Why it matters
