On 8 March 1886 the committee named by the Académie des sciences adopted a public subscription to fund an establishment for post-exposure rabies treatment. By November 1886 the total passed 1.7 million gold francs; construction land in Vaugirard was bought in 1887. The 1888 inauguration is a later organisation Fact. Foreign sovereigns and ordinary donors appear on the list. Pasteur did not privately endow the whole house.

Context

French research had been a ministry-and-faculty affair. A charitable public appeal for a laboratory was unusual.
