In 1608 the King's Men occupied the Blackfriars indoor theatre. Shakespeare is listed among the housekeepers of that hall. This is a completed property-and-company arrangement, after years in which the Burbages had held the space and leased it to boys' companies.
Context
Blackfriars is a former monastic precinct, a legal liberty. Indoor playing meant candles, higher prices, and a different crowd than the Globe yard. The 1596 petition of Blackfriars residents against a playhouse is an earlier local conflict; by 1608 the King's Men used the hall. Shakespeare did not invent indoor theatre.
Why it matters
Winter indoor playing is a seasonal access expansion. It is also a price expansion: hall audiences paid more. Both are real.
