On 14 February 2025, the same day as his Munich speech, Vice President Vance met Alice Weidel, lead candidate of Alternative for Germany, and did not hold a bilateral with Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Context
Germany’s mainstream parties maintained a ‘firewall’ against AfD. Vance’s speech said there was no room for firewalls. Scholz called the backing of AfD improper interference. Weidel is a German party leader, not a U.S. officer. A vice-presidential bilateral is a diplomatic instrument nine days before Germany’s 23 February 2025 election. It is not a Bundestag vote.
The Munich speech is a different instrument the same day. Merz’s later chancellorship is neighbouring.
The Vice President of the United States is President of the Senate and a heartbeat from the presidency. He does not enact statutes alone, command the armed forces as principal, or write tariff schedules. Tie-breaking votes are his; most bills still need a Senate majority and a presidential signature. Office-holding is not authorship of every later executive order. Allegation is not a completed judgment.
Why it matters
The path is political polarisation: a U.S. vice president meeting a far-right lead candidate days before a German election, while skipping the chancellor, is a completed alliance-shock.

Established: Vance met Weidel in Munich on 14 February 2025 and did not meet Scholz that visit.
Not established: that the meeting determined the 23 February German result, or that Vance joined AfD.
Weidel is the counterpart. Scholz is the skipped counterpart. German voters still voted.. A later repeal, court stay, or successor order would be a different Fact with a different date. That pair identifies Vance meets AfD leader Alice Weidel in Munich and does not meet Scholz, not a later speech about Vance meets AfD leader Alice Weidel in Munich and does not meet Scholz.
Co-authors and later implementers named in Context remain on the file. If a later repeal, stay, or successor instrument exists, it needs its own date and its own row. The contribution described on this Person row is limited to He took the meeting. Weidel is the counterpart. Scholz is the skipped counterpart. German voters still voted. That limit is the alternative to treating office-holding as authorship of every later series.
