On 22 May 2024 Vietnam’s National Assembly elected Tô Lâm, the minister of public security, as state president after Võ Văn Thưởng resigned in March following party-rule violations in the anti-corruption campaign. Analysts called the presidency a stepping stone to the party chief job.

Context

Võ Văn Thưởng is unresolved. The blazing-furnace campaign is neighbouring personnel weather Tô Lâm had implemented as minister and as deputy head of the steering committee. One-party Assembly votes are not competitive rotation.

Thưởng resignation March; 22 May election. Store the Assembly vote as the instrument. Keep National Assembly elects public-security minister Tô Lâm as president on 2024-05-22 separate from neighbouring 6–7 October 2020 arrest, 14 December 2021 sentence, 22 May 2024 presidency, 3 August 2024 general secretary, 19 August 2024 Beijing talks, and January–April 2026 dual-role confirmation.

The CPV general secretary since 3 August 2024, and president again from 7 April 2026, can order party personnel, public-security policy, and a first foreign trip. The 2016–24 ministry can arrest and charge under propaganda articles. That office does not sit as an RSF jury, does not write an FMPRC communique as Beijing’s author, and a monitor’s prisoner list is not converted here into Contribution.size.

Why it matters

The path is transfer and electoral integrity inside a one-party system: a completed police-minister elevation after a campaign-forced exit.

What the sources establish

Government of Vietnam carries the official instrument or communique. Reuters records the same dated act independently.

Established: A 22 May 2024 National Assembly election of the public-security minister as president, independently recorded.

Not established: A unique number of officials purged as Contribution.size, or that the vote was a competitive multi-party contest.

The campaign he had implemented removed the predecessor. He took the oath.. A later repeal, court stay, or successor order would be a different Fact with a different date. That pair identifies National Assembly elects public-security minister Tô Lâm as president, not a later speech about National Assembly elects public-security minister Tô Lâm as president.

Co-authors and later implementers named in Context remain on the file. If a later repeal, stay, or successor instrument exists, it needs its own date and its own row. The contribution described on this Person row is limited to The Assembly elected him. He took the oath. That limit is the alternative to treating office-holding as authorship of every later series.
