On 8 February 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy removed Zaluzhnyi from the post of commander-in-chief after months of visible disagreement about strategy, mobilization and the state of the war. Oleksandr Syrskyi replaced him. Zaluzhnyi was later appointed Ukraine's ambassador to the United Kingdom. The dismissal marks the institutional end of his wartime command tenure; it does not by itself prove that either side of the civil-military disagreement was correct. The fact should be read together with the battlefield record and the failed 2023 counteroffensive rather than as a stand-alone judgment of competence.
