2025 Australian federal election

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese secured a second term as Labor expanded its House majority and opposition leader Peter Dutton lost his seat.

Report

The Australian Labor Party won the federal election on 3 May 2025, returning Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for a second term with an enlarged majority in the House of Representatives. The Liberal-National Coalition suffered major losses, and opposition leader Peter Dutton lost his Queensland constituency.

Australia uses preferential voting in single-member House districts, so first-preference totals are redistributed until a candidate has a majority. National vote shares cannot be translated directly into seats, and the Senate follows a different proportional system.

The campaign focused on cost of living, housing, health, energy and leadership. Labor's result made Albanese the first prime minister in two decades to win consecutive elections, but a large lower-house majority did not grant control of every Senate vote.

The Australian Electoral Commission's count establishes the result, with close districts finalized over time. Concession and caretaker conventions enabled continuity while writs and returns completed the formal process.

This item records the electoral mandate, separate from cabinet changes and policy implementation. It avoids treating Dutton's personal defeat as equivalent to disappearance of the opposition coalition and does not assign one national motive to voters operating through local preference choices.

Preference flows from eliminated candidates contributed to many district results, illustrating why campaign alliances and voter rankings mattered. A first-preference lead is informative but is not the sole legal count under Australia's system.
