Bulgaria and Romania fully join Europe's Schengen Area
Published Factrail editorial research

Routine land-border checks with other Schengen members ended, completing the accession that began for air and sea travel in 2024.
Report
Bulgaria and Romania fully joined the Schengen Area on 1 January 2025 when routine checks at their internal land borders with other participating states were lifted. Air and sea border controls had already ended in March 2024 under the first stage of accession.
The change followed a unanimous EU decision after years of assessment and political delay. Travellers could cross the two countries' borders with Greece and Hungary without systematic passport booths, while temporary internal controls could still be introduced under Schengen rules.
Checks on the Bulgaria-Romania border were also removed, although police cooperation and targeted identity checks continued. Entry into Schengen did not eliminate customs enforcement for goods, immigration requirements at the EU's external border or the obligation to carry valid travel documents.
Both countries had joined the European Union in 2007 and applied much of Schengen law before full entry. Schengen membership is distinct from use of the euro and does not make border policy identical in every member state.
EU and national records establish the transition. This item records completion of land accession rather than falsely repeating the 2024 air-and-sea milestone. Later traffic effects, migration patterns and temporary controls require measured evidence and should not be inferred from the ceremonial removal of barriers alone.
Road freight and passenger traffic had experienced long queues at internal borders before full accession. Removing routine controls could reduce delay, but observed benefits depend on traffic volume, police practice and any temporary checks introduced under the common code.
