Giorgia Meloni becomes Italy's prime minister

Giorgia Meloni

Meloni took office at the head of a right-wing coalition, becoming the first woman to lead an Italian government.

Report

Giorgia Meloni took office as prime minister of Italy on 22 October 2022 after President Sergio Mattarella asked her to form a government. She and her ministers were sworn in at the presidential palace following the September parliamentary election and coalition negotiations.

Meloni's Brothers of Italy had won the largest vote share within a right-wing alliance with the League and Forza Italia. Italian voters elect parliament rather than the prime minister directly. The president's appointment and subsequent confidence votes in both chambers completed the constitutional formation of government.

She became Italy's first woman prime minister. Her party's roots and earlier statements prompted debate about the post-fascist right, while Meloni emphasized support for NATO, Ukraine and European cooperation during the campaign. Labels describing ideology should be sourced and should not replace reporting of specific policy actions.

The swearing-in established executive office but did not implement the coalition programme immediately. Budget measures, migration policy and institutional reforms required legislation and administration. Coalition partners also retained independent interests that could shape decisions.

Presidential and parliamentary records establish the transition. This event is separate from the election result and confidence votes, even though they form one sequence. It records who became head of government and under what coalition, without treating every future act of the cabinet as predetermined on inauguration day.
