October 7 attacks

Attackers breached the border, killed civilians and security personnel, fired rockets and abducted hostages in an assault that triggered a new war.

Report

Hamas-led armed groups attacked southern Israel on 7 October 2023, firing thousands of rockets and breaching the barrier around the Gaza Strip at multiple points. Attackers entered communities, a music festival and military sites, killing civilians and security personnel and taking hostages into Gaza.

The assault involved Hamas's military wing and other Palestinian armed groups. Evidence includes survivor accounts, videos, physical sites and subsequent investigations. Early casualty numbers and some atrocity claims changed as victims were identified; responsible reporting uses verified findings and does not repeat graphic allegations merely because they circulated widely.

Deliberate killing of civilians and hostage-taking are prohibited under international law. That legal assessment does not assign every Palestinian responsibility for the attack or justify unlawful harm to civilians in Gaza. Individual and command responsibility must follow evidence about specific actors.

Hamas described the operation in the context of occupation, blockade, prisoners and events at holy sites. Those stated motives do not excuse attacks on civilians. The historical Israeli-Palestinian conflict is necessary context but should not erase the atomic choices and conduct documented on 7 October.

The 7 October entry is limited to the cross-border attack and abductions. Israel's war declaration and expanded military operations are separate Facts. Keeping them distinct preserves chronological and legal clarity, allowing consequences to be linked without converting them into retroactive proof for claims about the initial assault.
