Iran launches large ballistic-missile attack on Israel

October 2024 Iranian strikes on Israel

Iran fired roughly two hundred missiles in its second direct attack of the year, citing the killings of allied leaders and an Iranian commander.

Report

Iran launched a large ballistic-missile attack against Israel on 1 October 2024. Israel and the United States said Iran fired roughly two hundred missiles, many of which were intercepted by Israeli and allied defence systems while some struck or landed near military sites.

Iran said the attack responded to Israel's killings of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and an Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander. Retaliatory purpose is a stated motive, not an automatic legal justification under the rules governing force and self-defence.

One Palestinian man in the occupied West Bank was killed by falling debris, and damage was reported at several locations. Interception percentages and assessments of military damage varied and should be attributed. Limited public casualty numbers do not mean an indiscriminate risk to populated areas was absent.

The attack differed from Iran's April operation by relying heavily on faster ballistic missiles. Israel promised a response, and subsequent strikes occurred later in October. Those operations are separate Facts rather than part of one undated exchange.

Iranian and Israeli statements, imagery and missile tracking establish the event. This item records the direct state-to-state launch and its immediate results without treating either side's battle-damage claims as final. It keeps the linked regional killings as context while preserving independent scrutiny of each use of force.

Air-raid warnings sent civilians to shelters across Israel, and some transport and airspace operations were interrupted. Those precautionary consequences are part of the attack's impact even where interception prevented a direct strike on a home.
