Erdogan defeated opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu in the runoff after neither secured a majority in the first round.

Report

Recep Tayyip Erdogan won Türkiye's presidential runoff on 28 May 2023, defeating opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu. The Supreme Election Council confirmed that Erdogan received a majority, extending his leadership into a third presidential term after earlier service as prime minister.

The runoff followed a first round in which neither candidate crossed fifty percent. Parliamentary elections held at the same time as the first round gave the alliance led by Erdogan's party a legislative majority. Presidential and parliamentary mandates remained constitutionally distinct.

The campaign took place amid high inflation, recovery from devastating earthquakes and concerns about media access and institutional advantage. International observers said voters had a real choice but identified an unlevel playing field and restrictions on expression. Those findings qualify the context without replacing the counted result.

Kilicdaroglu led a broad opposition coalition and criticized the presidential system. Voter motives varied across regions and communities; one nationwide percentage cannot establish why each person voted. Refugee policy, nationalism, economic management and security all featured.

The election authority's final record establishes the outcome. This item is limited to reelection, not a blanket endorsement of every policy or a forecast of economic recovery. Swearing-in and cabinet appointments followed as separate steps under Türkiye's executive presidency. The runoff count is the relevant canonical result, rather than first-round projections.
