The power he actually held
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been president of Turkey since 28 August 2014 after eleven years as prime minister. The 2017 constitutional package made the presidency the centre of the executive. The Grand National Assembly still writes statutes. Courts still issue warrants. He is not every prosecutor.
What went wrong, and what is proven
He is not every dismissed teacher. He is the incumbent who declared the emergency and signed the decree-laws.
The 2017 presidential-system referendum is a completed constitutional change. Gezi 2013 is a completed police-and-political crackdown while he was prime minister. Unorthodox rate cuts are dated TCMB instruments under a presidency that publicly rejected orthodox tightening; later 2023 tightening is a neighbouring later row. The 2018 construction amnesty is a completed statute that later sat beside Kahramanmaraş 2023 as a building-stock fact, not as a unique death coefficient from the signing hour. Afrin 2018 and Libya 2020 are completed overseas force decisions. Hagia Sophia 2020 is a completed status change. The 2025 İmamoğlu detention and removal is a dated prosecutor-and-interior cluster: graft charges are alleged; removal from the mayoralty is completed; a conviction is not. The 2026 CHP leadership court file is a dated court act in a system he heads; he did not write the judgment.
What improved, and how far
EU accession talks opened while he was prime minister. Marmaray is a completed undersea rail. Istanbul Airport is a completed hub. TOKI housing is a dated mass-housing instrument. The 2013 public-service headscarf change is a completed access instrument for covered women in the civil service. The Black Sea Grain Initiative was signed in Istanbul. Finland and Sweden’s Assembly approval are NATO files he eventually allowed through. The 2025 Öcalan disarm call is a dated conflict-process step, not a completed peace.
Shared responsibility, and what the score does not say
The score does not say that every Istanbul detention is a personal homicide count. It does not say that Marmaray rebates a KHK. It does not convert a prosecutor’s warrant into a completed graft verdict. Confidence is high on the Official Gazette and Assembly votes, and medium where TCMB, contractors, and prosecutors sit between a signature and a welfare series.
Related people on this page are counterpart presidents and Union leaders who actually shared files: Putin, Zelenskyy, Biden, Trump, von der Leyen, Merkel, Macron, Meloni, Rutte, Netanyahu, Assad, Kallas. Related news and analysis are the Ukraine grain, NATO, and sanctions cluster already in production.
Official carriers include the Presidency (https://www.tccb.gov.tr/ (opens in a new tab)) and the Official Gazette (https://www.resmigazete.gov.tr/ (opens in a new tab)).
A president is powerful enough to own those decrees. He is not powerful enough to be the unique author of a tectonic plate or of a Strasbourg judgment, and the dossier keeps that line visible. Keep 15 July 2016 off the Marmaray opening. Keep İmamoğlu’s detention off a completed conviction. Keep TCMB cuts off a unique loaf price. If those distinctions feel pedantic, they are the alternative to a rally and the alternative to a cartoon.
Latest developments (2026-10-14)
Police raided Halk TV in Istanbul on 14 October 2026, live programming was cut and a state-appointed trustee took control of one of Turkey's most-watched opposition-leaning channels. Prosecutors said they had issued 17 detention warrants and detained 11 people in an investigation into chairman Cafer Mahiroglu for alleged bribery, tender rigging and money laundering. Mahiroglu, who was abroad, rejected the case as politically motivated. Reuters reported that Halk TV became the fifth major Turkish news outlet placed under a trustee, after Flash TV, Eko Turk, Haberturk and Tele1.
The timing sharpened the political cost for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan: the raid came hours before jailed Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, his most prominent rival, was due to begin his defence in a corruption trial involving roughly 400 defendants. Published reporting does not show that the media case was ordered to affect the trial, but it places the seizure inside Erdogan's wider confrontation with the main opposition. The immediate effect was the loss of independent editorial control at a widely watched channel and the detention of people connected to the company.
The government's strongest defence is the prosecutors' financial-crime case, which should be judged on court-tested evidence. The counterweight is the cumulative record of trustee appointments at critical outlets. What comes next: whether courts review the seizure transparently and whether Halk TV regains independent editorial control.
