In May 2026 a court ousted Özgür Özel as chairman of the Republican People’s Party, continuing a legal campaign against the main opposition after the 2025 İmamoğlu file. Özel later formed a new party.

Context

HRW and contemporaneous wires treated the ouster as part of an opposition crackdown. Courts issued the order. Erdoğan heads the executive that appoints much of the judicial high council architecture. He did not write the judgment. Complex contribution.
