On 19 March 2025 Istanbul prosecutors detained Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on graft and related charges. On 23 March a court jailed him pending trial and the Interior Ministry removed him from office. Erdoğan publicly dismissed protests as a show. Graft is alleged.
Context
İmamoğlu led Erdoğan in some polls and was about to be named CHP presidential candidate. Diploma cancellation at Istanbul University sat on the eve of detention. Mass protests followed; thousands were detained. Prosecutors wrote the indictment path; interior executed removal; Erdoğan set the political weather. He did not sit as the judge.
The 2026 CHP court file is a different date. A later conviction, if any, would be a different Fact.
The president of Turkey is head of state and, since the 2017 executive-presidency reform, head of government. The Grand National Assembly writes statutes; the Official Gazette records decrees; courts, governors, and the armed forces implement. He does not write a European Council conclusion, an IMF programme, or a UN General Assembly resolution.
Why it matters
The path is democratic-resilience: removing a leading opposition mayor by detention and interior order, days before a presidential-candidate naming, is a completed civic-closure act even while charges remain alleged.

Interior removed the mayor. A court jailed him pending trial. Charges are not a verdict.. A later repeal, court stay, or successor order would be a different Fact with a different date. That pair identifies A court jails Istanbul mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu pending trial and the interior ministry removes him from office, not a later speech about A court jails Istanbul mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu pending trial and the interior ministry removes him from office.
Co-authors and later implementers named in Context remain on the file. If a later repeal, stay, or successor decree exists, it needs its own date and its own row. The contribution described on this Person row is limited to He publicly backed the judiciary’s independence claim and dismissed protests. Interior removed the mayor. A court jailed him pending trial. Charges are not a verdict. That limit is the alternative to treating office-holding as authorship of every later series.
