United States and United Kingdom strike Houthi targets in Yemen

US–UK airstrikes on Yemen

Joint forces attacked radar, missile and drone sites after repeated Houthi assaults on commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

Report

United States and United Kingdom forces conducted joint strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen during the night of 11 January 2024, with support from several partner governments. Aircraft and ships attacked sites associated with missiles, drones, radar and command capabilities.

The strikes followed repeated Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea beginning after the Gaza war. The group said it was targeting ships linked to Israel or supporting Palestinians, but attacks affected vessels with varied ownership and routes. Threats to civilian shipping are not made lawful by a claimed political objective.

Washington and London described the action as collective self-defence intended to protect navigation. The Houthis and their de facto authorities condemned it as aggression. Whether each target and strike complied with international law depends on necessity, attribution, distinction and proportionality, not the parties' labels alone.

The operation did not end Houthi capability or the Yemen conflict, and further strikes followed. It also was distinct from maritime interception and the multinational defensive patrol established earlier. Casualty claims from authorities in Houthi-held areas require corroboration.

Official operational statements and independent imagery establish the joint attack. This item records the first major US-UK strike package of the Red Sea crisis, not every later exchange. It keeps shipping protection, the Gaza war and Yemen's internal conflict linked as context without merging them into one undifferentiated battlefield.
