Context

This entry is treated as Mohammad Abdul Hamid, president of Bangladesh from 2013 to 2023. Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) reported in April 2023 that Hamid was completing a two-term tenure of more than ten years and handing the presidency to Mohammed Sahabuddin. Before the presidency he had served repeatedly in parliament, including as Speaker. The presidency in Bangladesh sits inside a parliamentary system, so Hamid's public importance should not be confused with the executive authority of the prime minister and cabinet. Record

Hamid served two consecutive terms and left office on 24 April 2023 when Mohammed Sahabuddin was sworn in as his successor. In his final parliamentary address, BSS reported that Hamid called for democratic tolerance, constructive parliamentary participation and unity against anti-democratic forces. Those statements are part of his record but should not be converted into proof of Bangladesh's democratic performance. A president can use the office's symbolic authority, appointments and constitutional functions, while day-to-day executive policy remains largely with the elected government.
