The record is not a Resistance saint and not a cartoon Stalinist only. The heaviest documented costs are 1952 fellow-travel, Gulag delay, 1954 USSR whitewash, Camus and Merleau fractures, 1956 tempo, 1960 Castro praise, Fanon-preface violence talk, and 1970 Maoist apologetics with sequester theatre. Those rest on Gallimard, SEP, Britannica, INA, and the Nobel’s own refusal file, not on pamphlets alone.
The offsets are also documents: 1938–45 books and review, 1946 Jewish-question essay, 1960 121, 1964 refusal as independence of letters, Fanon amplification, Russell Tribunal, 1968, Saint Genet, Les Mots, Libération. Beauvoir, Fanon, Russell, and the 121 remain on the file.
He does not run a ministry and he does not become an institution, which was the point of 22 October 1964. Confidence is high on title pages and the refusal, and medium where unique casualty series or a 1943 civic silence are chained to a treatise without a statute.
