Ghazouani Sahel security
Ghazouani Sahel security is one continuing domestic mechanism in Mauritania: the former army chief who took the presidency on 1 August 2019, won a second term on 29 June 2024 with CENI figures above 56 percent while anti-slavery candidate Biram Dah Abeid called an electoral coup, and whose courts on 4 May 2026 sentenced two abolitionist deputies to four years for posts judged to attack national symbols. Its strongest welfare pathway: it weakens Having a say in government, a worse welfare reading.

What this driver is
Ghazouani Sahel security is one continuing domestic mechanism in Mauritania: the former army chief who took the presidency on 1 August 2019, won a second term on 29 June 2024 with CENI figures above 56 percent while anti-slavery candidate Biram Dah Abeid called an electoral coup, and whose courts on 4 May 2026 sentenced two abolitionist deputies to four years for posts judged to attack national symbols. It is a mechanism, not a Sahel-stability brochure and not a Soviet-scope repression row.
The driver is not a unique enslaved-person census invented here, not Ukraine, not Nagorno-Karabakh, and not eastern Congo. Neighbouring mechanisms — electoral integrity, civic space, capacity for peaceful transfer of power — can move with this file or against it. They do not replace it. This page does not mint Abeid Person husks and does not mint ukraine-war. A Global Slavery Index stock is neighbourhood. It is not Contribution.size. This node is 29 June 2024 and 4 May 2026.
It applies to Mauritania from the 2019 tenure through the 2024 second term and the 2026 deputy sentences. It is not proxy-war-intensity (1919–50) and not territorial-revisionism.
The legal core is the 29 June 2024 presidential poll; CENI figures from more than 99 percent of stations putting him above 56 percent with turnout 55.33 percent and Abeid at 22.14 percent; Abeid’s refusal to recognise the result; and the 4 May 2026 Nouakchott-Ouest criminal-chamber sentences of Ghamou Achour and Marieme Cheikh Dieng to four years. Reuters, BBC, AP, and RFI recorded those instruments. A speech that calls Mauritania a Sahel exception does not change the mechanism.
Mechanism
The file moves welfare through named channels.
First, a second-term poll that the runner-up called an electoral coup. On 29 June 2024 Mauritania voted. CENI on 30 June printed more than 56 percent for him from 4,468 of 4,503 stations, turnout 55.33 percent. Abeid was printed at 22.14 percent. BBC recorded about 56 percent and about 55 percent turnout. Abeid said he would not recognise the so-called independent commission. Those instruments disagree on the last decimal. This page does not invent a unique result integer.
Second, court capture of abolitionist deputies. On 4 May 2026 the Nouakchott-Ouest criminal chamber sentenced Ghamou Achour and Marieme Cheikh Dieng, IRA figures around Abeid, to four years after social-media posts that criticised him and accused the justice system of treating Black citizens as second-class. They had been placed in detention on 21 April. RFI recorded digital-account closures ordered by the court. AP recorded the same four-year terms. This page does not invent a unique detainee integer.
Third, slavery-legacy neighbourhood. BBC and AP recorded that Mauritania abolished slavery in 1981 and that GSI 2023 printed about 149,000 people in modern slavery. That figure is neighbourhood. It is not stored as a size. Abeid’s grandparents were slaves. He is unresolved.
Fourth, command. He is president and former army chief. Sharing a 2019 first-transfer slogan is not a reason to drop 29 June 2024. Sharing a Sahel-security photograph is not a reason to hang this file on ukraine-war.
Timing is a polling day and a court day. A later genuine contest would be a new fact. It would not hang this driver on Glavlit, Ukraine, or a unique IDP stock invented here.
Evidence base
The best evidence is Reuters and BBC on the 29–30 June 2024 poll, AP on the 4 May 2026 sentences, and RFI on the same court day.

This page does not invent a unique enslaved-person integer or copy GSI 2023 as Contribution.size.
Evidence is strongest for the dated poll and the 4 May sentences. It is weaker for any unique first-day protest casualty. It is weakest where a Sahel-stability slogan is asked to rebate 4 May 2026.
Effect on welfare indicators
This driver, when it actually runs, is a first-order channel into voice-and-accountability series.
- Having a say in government: direction lower voice when a second-term poll is rejected by the runner-up and abolitionist deputies are sentenced for criticising the president. Horizon: a reporting year. Confidence: high for the dated CENI figures and the 4 May court day.
An electricity-access or PISA path does not follow without a sourced channel. Education, CPI, and WJP padding are not this family.
The welfare sign of the driver on voice is negative: strengthening this Sahel-security presidency reduces a higher-is-better say-in-government reading. That is the opposite of treating 29 June 2024 as an uncontested democratic consolidation.
Interactions and contested points
The mechanism interacts with electoral integrity because Abeid printed his own commission claim against CENI. Offsetting is the claim that a first-round win and a Sahel exception rebate the court day. Gas-start neighbourhood is not ukraine-war.
The strongest competing view is that CENI printed a first-round majority and that observers had praised 2019. Reuters stores the 2024 figures and Abeid’s refusal.
A second competing view is that slavery is a social remainder, not a presidential instrument. The 4 May sentences are a dated court instrument against abolitionist deputies. GSI stocks stay neighbourhood.
Established: 29 June 2024 poll; CENI 55.33 percent turnout; 4 May 2026 four-year sentences. Not established: a unique result integer reconciling “over 56 percent” with a later final, or minted Abeid Person rows. It would not rename this driver as democratic consolidation.
