On 30 September 2022 Captain Ibrahim Traoré announced on national television the overthrow of junta president Paul-Henri Damiba, the dissolution of the government, and the suspension of the constitution. Borders were closed and a curfew declared.

He spoke for officers who had helped Damiba seize power in January. Damiba is unresolved. He was sworn interim president on 21 October 2022.
