On 20 October 2022, the original 18-month mark of the CMT calendar, Chadian security forces fired on banned demonstrations in N’Djamena, Moundou, and other cities against the national dialogue’s two-year extension of Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno’s transition. Prime Minister Saleh Kebzabo announced a provisional toll of 50 dead and 300 injured and said forces acted in self-defence. Amnesty recorded live ammunition. Chad’s CNDH later reported at least 128 deaths. The Ligue tchadienne des droits de l’Homme later reported a higher tally.

Context

The dialogue had postponed elections toward October 2024 and allowed the junta head to remain. Protests were banned on 19 October. Succès Masra and Wakit Tamma are unresolved. A later amnesty law closed prosecutions of the force file.

20 October protests; 21 October Amnesty and government tallies; later CNDH report. Stored as one 20 October 2022 Fact. Keep Security forces fire on protests against the two-year extension of the transition on 2022-10-20 separate from neighbouring Déby instruments.

The President of Chad is head of state and commander of the armed forces. He can chair a military council, take a charter, and be confirmed by a constitutional council. He does not write Amnesty briefing notes, CNDH tallies, or Reuters forensic reviews.

Why it matters

The path is the owned hereditary-junta driver: a completed live-fire enforcement of an extended junta clock.

Who was responsible

  • Direct responsibility

    verified

He was transitional president and CMT heir when the clock was extended and when the forces fired. Sharing a PM tally is not a reason to drop 20 October 2022.

What the sources establish

Human Rights Watch recorded scores shot.

Al Jazeera carries the official instrument or communique. Amnesty International records the same dated act independently.

Established: Security forces fired on 20 October 2022 protests against the extension. Kebzabo announced 50 dead. Amnesty recorded live ammunition.

Not established: A unique death integer reconciling Kebzabo, CNDH, and LTDH, or that Masra is a minted Person row.

Sharing a PM tally is not a reason to drop 20 October 2022.. A later repeal, court stay, or successor order would be a different Fact with a different date. That pair identifies Security forces fire on protests against the two-year extension of the transition, not a later speech about Security forces fire on protests against the two-year extension of the transition.

Co-authors and later implementers named in Context remain on the file. If a later repeal, stay, or successor instrument exists, it needs its own date and its own row. The contribution described on this Person row is limited to He was transitional president and CMT heir when the clock was extended and when the forces fired. That limit is the alternative to treating office-holding as authorship of every later series.
