In 1845 Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 3 in B minor, Op. 58, was published as a four-movement work dedicated to Countess Emilie de Perthuis, after the 1840 B-flat minor sonata (Op. 35) had already shocked the market with its funeral-march movement. 58 print, not Op. 35 and not a later critical edition. Chopin wrote the sonata at the Nohant-Paris hinge of the mid-1840s; engravers made the object. Later complete sonata cycles on disc are reception.

3 in B minor, Op. 58 (1845-01-01).

Context

A piano sonata in 1845 still carried Beethoven’s public shadow. Chopin’s Op. 58 answers with lyric movements and a finale that is not a political march. Op. 35’s march is a different opus and a different public argument. Countess de Perthuis was a pupil-patron; she is not listed as co-author. A four-movement piano sonata in the shops is a public record of large form; it is not a funeral march from another opus and not a conservatory statute that retired Beethoven that year. Nohant quiet may be the production weather; the colophon is still a Paris-German shop object with a pupil-patron’s name on the title page.

What the sources establish

BnF data and catalogues identify the Paris impression of Op. 58. IMSLP independently reproduces nineteenth-century plates of the B minor sonata. Official: https://data.bnf.fr/en/13892479/frederic_chopin/ (opens in a new tab). Independent: https://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Chopin,_Fr%C3%A9d%C3%A9ric (opens in a new tab). The records establish opus and year. They do not establish a unique later sonata-recital attendance series, nor a claim that Op. 35’s funeral march is hidden inside this B minor print, nor a measured conservatory reform in 1845.

Established: Op. 58 was published in 1845 as Chopin’s B minor sonata. Not established: that it displaced Beethoven in conservatories that year, or that Op. 35 is this print. A contradictory first issue year would change the row.

That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.
