On 18 August 1966 Mao Zedong reviewed hundreds of thousands of Red Guards in Tiananmen Square, wearing an armband and signalling that student rebellion had his authority. His 5 August poster ‘Bombard the Headquarters’ had already named the party apparatus as the target. August–September brought beatings, ‘house raids’, killings of teachers, and the Daxing and other massacres.
Context
Work teams sent by Liu and Deng in June were withdrawn as ‘suppressing the students’. The Eleventh Plenum’s Sixteen Points blessed rebellion. Local committees sometimes tried to limit killing and were themselves overthrown. Jiang Qing’s cultural group agitated; Mao’s review was the public licence.
