On 16 October 2009 the reconstructed Neues Museum on Berlin’s Museum Island reopened, with the Nefertiti bust among the principal exhibits. David Chipperfield’s rebuild is the architectural instrument. The opening is a completed public-access event.

Context

The museum had been a wartime ruin. The bust had been stored, displayed in fragments of the old circuit, and argued over diplomatically. 2009 put it back in a designed public sequence. Egypt’s restitution claim remained open.

Nefertiti is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
