On 6 January 2019 in Istanbul, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I handed the Tomos of autocephaly to Metropolitan Epiphanius of Kyiv and All Ukraine. The decree formally granted independence to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, with Epiphanius, also known as Epifaniy, recognised as the head of the new church.
