In 1894 Gandhi was a principal organiser of the Natal Indian Congress, a political association of merchants and professionals against anti-Indian bills. It is a minority-rights vehicle with a class limit: indentured workers were not its centre.
Context
A merchants’ congress can fight a colour bar and still speak for a trading elite. Both are true. Later satyagraha broadened the base.
Mahatma Gandhi is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
