On the night of 31 May 1893 Mohandas Gandhi, travelling with a first-class ticket from Durban toward Pretoria, was ordered out of his berth at Pietermaritzburg and spent the night in the station after refusing to move to third class. It is not yet satyagraha as a named campaign.

Context

Natal’s Indian traders and indentured workers already lived under colour bars. Gandhi arrived as a lawyer for a Muslim trading firm, not as a mass leader. The later autobiography made this night a conversion scene. Conversion scenes compress. The ejection still happened.

Mahatma Gandhi is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

Why it matters

Rights path, initiating. High confidence on the ejection as received; medium on it as a unique cause of later satyagraha.

A station bench is not a franchise. South African African writings are a separate row.

He occupied the berth as a barrister with a ticket. The company and police ejected him. Complex: the later political use is his.

A documented racial ejection became the public origin story of his South African civil-rights work, without erasing later African-writing controversies stored elsewhere.

What the sources establish

South African History Online and Britannica independently narrate the Pietermaritzburg incident as the opening of his South African years.

Established: he was ejected at Pietermaritzburg in 1893. Not established: that no Indian before him had been so treated, or that this night already was a national movement.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, and museums are not converted into extra lifetime acts. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself. Confidence is stated on the impact path. A later English edition is not a recovered autograph. If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
