On 11 June 1776 Duke Carl August appointed Johann Wolfgang Goethe Geheimer Legationsrat with a seat on the privy council of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. The instrument is a completed court appointment. It is not a poem and not a constitution.

Context

Weimar was a small Thuringian duchy. Privy-council business covered war, mines, roads, and criminal mercy. Goethe’s later fame does not convert the office into a liberal ministry. Serfdom and capital sentences sat on the same table as theatre and parks.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

Why it matters

Worsening resilience path: a public writer entered unreformed princely government. High confidence on the appointment.

Office is not Faust.

He sat on the Geheimes Consilium. The duke appointed; colleagues shared votes. Complex court office, not lyric authorship.

What the sources establish

Klassik Stiftung Weimar institutional history and Britannica independently date the 1776 appointment.

Established: Goethe joined the privy council in 1776. Not established: that the appointment created a unique modern democracy coefficient, or that every later Weimar harm is his handwriting.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, and museums are not converted into extra lifetime acts. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself. Confidence is stated on the impact path. A later English edition is not a recovered autograph. If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
