Gauss enters the Collegium Carolinum in Brunswick on a ducal scholarship
In February 1792 Carl Friedrich Gauss entered Brunswick’s Collegium Carolinum on a stipend arranged through teachers who had shown his work to Duke Charles William Ferdinand. In the causal graph this event strengthens Digital Learning Access, a driver that weakens Learning Poverty Rate (low- and middle-income countries) — an improving welfare path.

In February 1792 Carl Friedrich Gauss entered Brunswick’s Collegium Carolinum on a stipend arranged through teachers who had shown his work to Duke Charles William Ferdinand. He worked Latin, Greek, and higher mathematics in a civic college that was not yet a full university. Professors such as Eberhard August Wilhelm von Zimmermann noticed him; they did not write the later number-theory book. The row stores one school act.
Context
Brunswick in the 1790s still ran talent as a ducal ornament. A bricklayer’s son reached the Carolinum because a prince paid, which is why the welfare sign here is education access, not a claim that the duchy became a republic of letters. The later Gauss Society and Göttingen observatory museum are other people’s rooms. A scholarship boy is not a minister of education. Zimmermann’s introductions to the court are the social hinge; they are not co-authorship of later geodesy.
Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Carolinum is not Disquisitiones and not a later Gaussian distribution. Mixed effects of Gauss enters the Collegium Carolinum in Brunswick on a ducal scholarship are separate paths.
Why it matters
Improving education path: systematic college mathematics before any famous book. High confidence on the years. Modest weight: one scholarship is not a school statute. The duke’s money, stored elsewhere as class patronage, does not erase the course. Lag from a 1792 classroom to later European number theory is real and is not treated as zero.
That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

He studied languages and mathematics at the Carolinum. The duke paid. Complex scholarship boy, not the college’s rector.

What the sources establish
Deutsche Biographie dates the Carolinum years and the ducal support. MacTutor independently narrates the 1792–1795 college course and the teachers who pushed the stipend. Official: https://www.deutsche-biographie.de/sfz20037.html (opens in a new tab). Independent: https://mathshistory.st-andrews.ac.uk/Biographies/Gauss/ (opens in a new tab). Different publishers. The records establish enrolment, city, and the scholarship frame. They do not establish a unique later German literacy series, or that every summing-anecdote is a 1792 register line. What would change the row is a contradictory college roll with another start year.
Established: Gauss studied at the Collegium Carolinum from 1792 on a ducal stipend. A contradictory stipend paper with another college would change the row. A later Gaussian integral in a textbook would not.
Shared responsibility is part of Gauss enters the Collegium Carolinum in Brunswick on a ducal scholarship. Naming Carl Friedrich Gauss does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1792-02-18 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.
