Von Zach recovers Ceres using Gauss’s computed orbit

In 1801 Giuseppe Piazzi’s Palermo observations of a new object, later named Ceres, were interrupted; European astronomers lost it in the Sun’s glare. Gauss computed an orbit from the sparse arc, and on the last night of 1801 Franz Xaver von Zach recovered the object near the predicted place, with others confirming. In the causal graph this event strengthens the driver Personal-Data Protection.

Piazzi discovered; Gauss calculated; observers pointed. It is not a spacecraft and not a later dwarf-planet redefinition. The row stores one astronomical data act.

Context

Orbit determination from a short arc was an open computational problem. Gauss’s method, later written out in Theoria motus (1809), made a lost moving point findable — knowledge as coordinates, hence a data path, with navigation-adjacent uses for anyone who points a telescope. Burckhardt and others also tried orbits; Gauss’s numbers were the ones that found the object. A recovered minor planet is not a later statistical ‘Gaussian’ error law, even if least squares sits in the same career.

Shared responsibility is part of Von Zach recovers Ceres using Gauss’s computed orbit. Naming Carl Friedrich Gauss does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1801-12-31 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

Why it matters

Improving data path: sparse observations became a public, checkable orbit. High confidence on the recovery cluster. Modest-to-medium weight because it reorganised planetary-minor-body practice, still not a statistical office. Later dwarf-planet politics and spacecraft are other centuries. Navigation-adjacent: anyone who could point could test the numbers. That is not a navy commission.

What the sources establish

The Göttingen Academy, Gauss’s later institutional home, documents his astronomical work in its public history. Britannica’s Ceres article independently states that Gauss’s orbit enabled the December 1801 recovery after Piazzi’s lost object. Official: https://www.adw-goe.de/ (opens in a new tab). Independent: https://www.britannica.com/topic/Ceres-dwarf-planet (opens in a new tab). MacTutor’s biography corroborates as a finding aid. The records establish the 1801 computation and recovery. They do not establish a unique later asteroid-catalog coefficient, or a NASA act. A showing that von Zach recovered Ceres without Gauss’s prediction would change the row.

Established: Gauss’s 1801 orbit led to Ceres’s recovery at the end of that year. Not established: that he discovered Ceres, or that a modern ephemeris is this calculation. A contradictory 1801 observer’s log ignoring his prediction would reopen the causal claim. A 21st-century mission would not.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Ceres recovery is not a NASA mission and not a later Gaussian distribution. Mixed effects of Von Zach recovers Ceres using Gauss’s computed orbit are separate paths.

That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.
