Gauss does not publicly defend Weber among the Göttingen Seven

In December 1837 Ernst August of Hanover dismissed seven Göttingen professors, including Wilhelm Weber, for refusing the king’s breach of the 1833 constitution. Gauss, observatory director and Weber’s senior partner, did not sign the protest and did not publicly defend the Seven. In the causal graph this event strengthens Judicial independence erosion (court capture), a driver that strengthens Rule of Law Gap from the Highest Governance Score — a worsening welfare path.

It is not the 1833 telegraph, not the magnetic papers, and not a claim that Gauss wrote the dismissal order. The king fired; Gauss stayed.

Context

The Göttingen Seven are a constitutional-and-university story. A silent genius is not the monarch, but silence from the most famous name on the hill chilled the shop and taught younger men the cost of protest. Leipzig’s later welcome of Weber is independent institutional colour, not Gauss’s rehabilitation act. Medium confidence on motives (prudence, conservatism, dislike of politics); high confidence on non-signature. A silent senior on the same hill taught younger men the price of protest without needing to draft the royal order.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Silence in 1837 is not the 1833 telegraph and not Weber’s later Leipzig chair as Gauss’s act. Mixed effects of Gauss does not publicly defend Weber among the Göttingen Seven are separate paths.

Why it matters

Worsening justice path: political firing unanswered by the senior scientist. Medium confidence on motive, high on the silence. Modest weight: he was not the king. Telegraph and magnetism remain improving neighbours. 1848 conservatism is a later political colour.

That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

  • Direct responsibility

    responsibility level 0.32 · verified

Weber and six colleagues were dismissed for protesting a constitutional breach. Gauss, their senior, did not join the protest. Complex silent colleague, not the king who fired them.

What the sources establish

Göttingen’s own institutional history has to live with the 1837 dismissals on the same hill as the observatory. Leipzig University independently locates Weber’s later seat after the firing, confirming the personnel rupture. Official: https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/96209.html (opens in a new tab). Independent: https://www.uni-leipzig.de/ (opens in a new tab). Britannica’s Gauss biography is a finding aid on the Weber years. The records establish the 1837 dismissals and Gauss’s continuation in office without joining the Seven. They do not establish a unique later judicial-independence index. Leipzig’s later chair is Weber’s next employer, not a Gauss rehabilitation decree. A 1837 public Gauss letter of defence would change the row.

Established: in 1837 Weber was dismissed among the Seven and Gauss did not publicly join their protest. Not established: that Gauss drafted the royal order, or that the 1833 wire is this firing. A public defence letter of December 1837 would change the row.

Shared responsibility is part of Gauss does not publicly defend Weber among the Göttingen Seven. Naming Carl Friedrich Gauss does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1837-12-12 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
