In June 1735 Carl Linnaeus received a medical doctorate at the University of Harderwijk in the Dutch Republic, a quick degree that let him enter Leiden’s learned market. Jan Frederik Gronovius and Isaac Lawson would underwrite the first Systema. Those patrons are named, not erased.

Context

Swedish students often took cheap Dutch degrees. Harderwijk was notorious for speed. The move still placed Linnaeus inside the Batavian print world where Systema, Fundamenta, and Genera Plantarum could appear. Olof Rudbeck the Younger had been the Uppsala teacher; he did not sign the Dutch diploma.
