On 29 January 2025, US President Donald Trump signed the Laken Riley Act, the first bill of his second term. The law amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to require federal detention without bond of certain non-citizens who are arrested for or charged with offences such as burglary, theft, shoplifting or assaulting a police officer, even before any conviction, and grants state attorneys general expanded standing to sue the federal government over immigration enforcement decisions. The Act is named after a Georgia nursing student killed in 2024.
