On 5 June 1955 Boston University accepted Martin Luther King Jr.’s Ph.D. dissertation. Later public scholarly apparatus, including the King Papers Project, documented extensive unattributed borrowing in that text and in some sermons.

Context

It is not a licence to erase Montgomery or Selma. It is also not an FBI invention: the Papers Project, which exists to publish him accurately, recorded the borrowing.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below.

The 1955 filing is his. Later King Papers Project apparatus documented uncredited passages. That later finding is not a 1955 university press release.

Why it matters

A dissertation audit is not a bus boycott. Keep the dates split.

Who was responsible

Contribution type and responsibility level for each recorded actor — not sole-author shorthand.

What changed

Fact → Driver → Indicator. Relationship strength orders the paths; it is not the observed indicator movement.

What the sources establish

Stanford’s King Institute publishes the papers apparatus; Britannica independently treats the dissertation and later scholarly critique as part of the public file.

Established: the 1955 dissertation was accepted and later public scholarship documented unattributed borrowing. Not established: that every sermon was copied, or that the finding cancels later statutes.
