On 25 March 1965 the Selma-to-Montgomery march, resumed under federal protection after Bloody Sunday and a second-turn controversy, reached the Alabama Capitol with King as the principal national spokesman.

Context

He did not bleed on 7 March. He did complete the later federally protected march and the Montgomery address. Local people remain principals.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below.

SNCC and local Dallas County activists built Selma. Bloody Sunday (7 March) was John Lewis and Hosea Williams at the Edmund Pettus Bridge; King was in Atlanta that afternoon. The completed 21–25 March march is the instrument here.

Why it matters

A march is not the Voting Rights Act text. Keep 6 August.
