On 2 December 1854 Louis Pasteur was named professor of chemistry and dean of the newly created Faculty of Sciences at Lille. It is not yet the 1857 lactic-fermentation memoir and not a Paris institute. Lille’s beet-sugar and alcohol trades sat next to the lecture hall. A dean’s signature on a faculty is an administrative and teaching act, not a vaccine.

Context

The Second Empire expanded provincial faculties partly to serve industry. Lille was a beet and textile city, not a medical capital. Pasteur’s famous remark that chance favours the prepared mind is later colour; the 1854 instrument is the appointment decree and the teaching post. Assistants and local manufacturers shared the applied questions. Sharing does not erase the named dean.

Shared responsibility is part of Pasteur is appointed professor of chemistry and dean of the new Lille faculty of sciences. Naming Louis Pasteur does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1854-12-02 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

Why it matters

Improving education path with a light industrial coupling. Weight stays modest: a faculty is not a mortality series. High confidence on the appointment year and office.

Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Louis-Pasteur (opens in a new tab) independently dates the 1854 Lille chair and deanship and the turn toward fermentation. Neither page is a complete payroll.
