In 1754 the Sistine Madonna left Piacenza for the Dresden court. Raphael had painted for a church; an elector bought the panel. He did not authorise the sale.

Context

A princely purchase is cultural extraction from a civic-religious context. Later public gallery access in Dresden is a different, improving row if used.

Raphael is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
