Urbino-born painter and papal architect (1483–1520) whose Roman workshop frescoed Julius II’s and Leo X’s stanze, designed Sistine tapestries, and took the St Peter’s brief. The most recent verified record is “The St Peter’s fabbrica Raphael joined was financed by the indulgence system later condemned as a sale of justice” (1 April 1514), linked to the driver Judicial Independence.

Editorial assessment (context, not the score)

The dossier is not a graceful saint of painting and not a cartoon of a lone genius. The heaviest documented costs are papal-room propaganda, workshop brand-rent, indulgence-funded St Peter’s office, luxury tapestries, Vasari’s erased labour, trophy sales, Vatican-state tourism, and restoration risk. Offsets are public Madonnas, cartoons as teaching walls, drawings that show work, and conservation listing.

He did not sign 1929 or 1980. Confidence is high on payments and panels, medium on political size, low on the 1520 fever.

Expert analysis

An excerpt; the full analysis opens on request.

The first fact about Raphael is a shop. Roman walls at the scale of the stanze are not one wrist. Cartoons for Brussels weavers are not a solitary weekend. St Peter’s after Bramante is a fabbrica. Catalogues that say ‘Raphael painted’ without ‘workshop’ are already doing Vasari’s 1568 work.

Julius II’s Segnatura and Eliodoro rooms are audience-hall politics: philosophy owned by a pope, Heliodorus as property defence, Attila as a scarecrow with Leo X’s face. Leo’s 1515 cartoons spent like a war. The 1514 architectural brief sat inside indulgence finance. A Medici pope sits with kin-cardinals in red. Assistants executed and were under-credited. Vasari then wrote grace where account books would have written names. Dresden bought an altar in 1754. The 1929 Vatican state made the rooms a sovereign itinerary. Restorations cleaned and may have lost. Chapel textiles participate in a Christian-triumph image world; that rights reading stays bounded and low-confidence, not a fake ghetto statute of 1515.

Offsets are equally dated and mostly later public: Brera’s 1504 panel, Uffizi face, V&A cartoons, NGA, London NG, Louvre, Prado, Ashmolean drawings that betray labour, British Museum prints, Smarthistory, UNESCO 1980. Farnesina is a banker villa now visitable — design capacity, not a parish.

What the score must not say: that he authored 1929; that School of Athens is a secular republic; that restorers are the original villains of 1509; that a tapestry is a labour court; that Attila sat for Raphael. Complex contribution is required almost everywhere.

Related people are Julius II, Leo X, Bramante, Giulio Romano, Giovanni Francesco Penni, Marcantonio Raimondi, Baldassare Castiglione, Agostino Chigi, Michelangelo as rival on the Sistine, and Attila as painted type — roles and periods.

1509 is not 1984. 1515 is not 1865. Official and independent URLs differ. Confidence high on objects and briefs, medium on propaganda size, low on fever and privacy. Mixed effects of the same wall stay on separate paths.
