On 7 November 1917 (25 October Old Style) Bolshevik-led forces of the Petrograd Military Revolutionary Committee seized telegraph, bridges, and then the Winter Palace. Lenin’s proclamation declared the Provisional Government overthrown. The Second Congress of Soviets then endorsed a Bolshevik-Left SR government.

Context

This is an insurrection, not a general-election result. The Constituent Assembly still had to meet — and was later dissolved. Trotsky chaired the MRC. Kerensky fled.

Shared responsibility with other offices is part of the record. Sharing is not a reason to drop this person's documented role, and it is not a reason to treat every later consequence as their handwriting.

Why it matters

Initiating executive-power concentration. Direct contribution, shared with the MRC. High confidence.

Who was responsible

Contribution type and responsibility level for each recorded actor — not sole-author shorthand.

  • Direct responsibility

    responsibility level 0.85 · verified

Lenin demanded insurrection against Kamenev/Zinoviev delay. The MRC and Trotsky organized the operations.

What the sources establish

The 25 October proclamation is official. Britannica and Rabinowitch independently reconstruct the night’s operations. Soviet later myth of a mass storming is not required.

Later commission estimates are attributed to those commissions.

Established: ministries and the Winter Palace were seized on 7 November 1917 N.S. and Lenin proclaimed the overthrow. Not established: that a majority of Russia had voted for this act.

Central files can show that an order was issued; they cannot reconstruct every locality's implementation. Memoir and literary evidence is independent texture, never the sole causal source. Official statistics of the period are treated as claims with known incentives. Later archival openings and museum publications are independent or successor-state records. The contribution is direct where this person signed, chaired, or issued the act, and remains bounded by other offices that had to act. Readers who want the welfare path should open the named driver rather than treating a portrait as the mechanism.
