On 29 May 1928 Congress awarded Thomas Edison a Congressional Gold Medal for his work in lighting and phonographs. It is a legislative honour, not a new machine.
Context
By 1928 GE, Westinghouse, and a generation of assistants had already built the industry. A medal can recognise and can flatten.
Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
Why it matters
National-memory path. High confidence on the medal; low on welfare coefficients.
A medal is not a kilowatt.
